Historic pub in Westminster

"The Red Lion, Parliament Street" in London, England, is a historic pub and a gastronomic gem deeply rooted in the city's political and cultural history. Located in the heart of Westminster, just a stone's throw away from significant institutions like Parliament and Downing Street, this pub has been a gathering place for politicians, journalists, and locals for centuries. Known as "Hopping Hall" as early as 1434, the current building was erected around 1890 and is now part of Fuller's Brewery. Its long history is highlighted by visits from famous figures such as Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill, and Clement Attlee, giving it a special status as a "political watering hole." The "Red Lion" is also equipped with a Division Bell that alerts MPs about upcoming votes in Parliament—a detail that further emphasizes its proximity to power.

Best fish and chips in London

Culinarily, "The Red Lion" offers a refined selection of pub classics made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Particularly noteworthy is the "Fish and Chips," a dish served with perfectly crispy batter and juicy, well-seasoned fries, considered one of the best of its kind in the city. Another popular dish is the "Steak & Ale Pie," a hearty pastry filled with tender meat and a rich, beer-based gravy that showcases British cuisine at its finest. For a sweet conclusion, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding," a warm, sweet dessert with caramel notes often served with vanilla ice cream, provides the perfect contrast to the hearty main courses. The dishes are prepared with great attention to detail, making the dining experience truly special.

Excellent beer selection pub

The drinks menu is another highlight of the pub. As part of the Fuller's family, the focus is on an excellent selection of beers, including classics like "London Pride," a creamy ale with a malty flavor that is highly regarded by regulars. Modern craft beers and a rotating selection of guest ales are also available, as well as a solid wine list and seasonal cocktails. Notably, the breakfast options range from the traditional "Full English Breakfast" with bacon, sausages, and eggs to lighter alternatives—ideal for starting the day in Westminster.

The décor, featuring dark wood, leather armchairs, and large windows that let in natural light, evokes a classic gin palace era while maintaining a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The upstairs dining room offers a somewhat quieter setting for meals, while the lower bar is often animated by a mix of political insiders and tourists. The outdoor area overlooking the bustling streets of Westminster is particularly popular on sunny days for enjoying a pint and watching the world go by.

Had a pleasant late lunch here. The pies are lovely, nicely served with superb service. The dining area upstairs is quite small, so booking for times between 12.00-14.30 is essential. Great for visiting the Houses of Parliament then lunch.

We had dinner here before going to the theatre. Lovely fresh food, great Fullers beers, and really nice service. Jose was happy to chat about their wines and the whole experience was excellent. Great position just minutes away for the Houses of Parliament.

Tasty food, classical menu with old style dishes that were delightfully surprising. Nice old decor very well maintained and a good location Out of downsides - quite pricey and noisy, paid over 50 euro for 2 starters and 1 main. Bar is quite popular so you might need to stand and wait for a table .

A cozy pub with friendly staff and tasty food in the heart of London. The sticky toffee pudding was perfect, not overly sweet.

Buenísimo y super recomendable sabiendo que pagarás considerablemente el cubierto como en casi todo Londres. Pub pequeño con historia, encanto y pedigrí. Frecuentado por parlamentarios.
